Target Will Open At Midnight for Black Friday

2011 Target Black Friday Hours

Target will open at midnight for Black Friday 2011.

Target will open their doors at midnight on Black Friday. In years past Target has opened to Black Friday shoppers at 4am, but this year is offering those shoppers the opportunity to get a jumpstart on Target’s Black Friday deals.

“The holidays bring hectic schedules and tight budgets, so extending store hours and offering lots of additional ways to save makes Target a great choice for affordable, one-stop holiday shopping,” said Tina Schiel, executive vice president, stores, Target.

The announcement comes on the heels of a previous announcement about Target’s planned crowd management strategy, which includes allowing 30 people to enter the store every 15-20 seconds in an effort to control the doorbuster stampedes that have marred Black Fridays in the past.

BlackFriday2011.com is posting hours for all stores as they are announced on the Black Friday store hours page.

I am really saddened to see all of the major retailers starting their so-called “Black Friday” sales on Thursday at midnight. Definitely takes the “black” out of the Friday after Thanksgiving….a tradition has been totally ruined.

    • Keyvan says:

Donita, looks like the government schools have corrupted you too. In case you did not read right, the first line of the article reads “Target will open their doors at midnight on Black Friday” and it does not even have the word “Thursday” anywhere in it nor in the article.

And in case you did not know, midnight is the start of a new day.

  2. Cindy Bampton says:

I think it’s great to see you will be open just after midnight! I sure beats trying to get up early and stand in line forever!! Thank you Target for putting your customers needs first!

  3. Trista says:

I love it! It will interfere with our Toys R Us run at Midnight, but I love staying up Thursday night and going out with my husband then coming home early Friday morning and sleeping in while my mother-in-law watches the kids. We get to enjoy more of Friday without being so tired. It is kinda lame how pumped I get for Black Friday every year, I don’t even spend a lot of money. I think its the standing in line with my husband freezing our butts off, it reminds me of waiting in line for concert tixs before we had a kid.

    • Tisha says:

Totally agree! The excitement in the air. LOL! We don’t spend alot either. Last year we got some great deals on household items and everyday items.

  4. Julie says:

Donita, do you not realize that at one second pass 12 midnight that it is officially Friday? I think it’s awesome that they are doing this for their customers, I’m usually up at midnight anyways. Plus most online sales start at midnight.

  5. michelle says:

but… will they have things that people want at midnight?? last year walmart opened at midnight but the big ticket items could not be bought until later that morning. we had to sit in the car forever because we didnt know

  6. Denise says:

I am so excited about this. This means I can get some sleep between then and when I normally get up to do black friday shopping! Woo!

  7. Yukon says:

The morons that like the stores being open this time of night are taking the sanctity out of the holidays. Think about all of the poor working people you are taking away from their families during the holidays so you can buy cheap, disposable junk made in China. This is ridiculous, and just a sad sign of our consumption and disposable society.

  8. rita says:

I love midnight openings. If movie premiere’s can do this why can’t shoppers? This would be rad. I don’t sleep thanksgiving night anyway because of the excitement. Now I can shop all night. Have a survivor breakfast and go home to sleep before the normal shoppers even get a taste of the experience. I make so many “friends” on these type of experiences. HATS OFF TO ANY RETAILER WHO OPENS AT MIDNIGHT.

  9. Erin says:

I like this idea because I work the day after Thanksgiving and this gives me a chance to go out and spend money!

  10. Sarah M says:

I like it! Now I can space it out a little better and get in on some more of the mall action.

  11. Danie says:

the past 2 yrs I did my shopping at midnight and the deals are so much better. Idk why ppl bitch about it specially when your saving money

    • Kim says:

Sheila, I am a nurse. A hospital operates 24/7, 365. If I am scheduled to work, I am there for 12 hours no matter what day of the year it is! Just a suggestion, if you don’t like it maybe you could find another job? Also, “dam” is spelled damn. Just sayin.

  12. Sheila says:

This is some real bulls*t!! I work for them dam can we have a full day off with our family ??? They want us to be at work by 11pm on Thanksgiving!! WTF!! I love my job but dam really ??? What is this world coming to???
    Pissed off big time!!

  13. Tisha says:

My husband and I loved doing our Black Friday shopping last year at midnight! It was so much nicer and better organized than previous years of early morning shopping. Then I came home put on my jammies, grabbed a cup of coffee and did some great online shoppin. I do feel sorry for the people that have to work these crazy hours, especially on a holiday. Woohoo can’t wait for Black Friday!!!

  14. Gina says:

I agree with Sheila. I used to love Black Friday until working at Target. It is ridiculous that we can not spend a day with our families because people are so obsessed with saving money (when in reality sales online and even some weekly sales are just as good). And the people that drag their small children around for black friday shopping (before a reasonable hour of course) need to take some parenting classes. This whole thing makes me angry!

  15. Marcie says:

Sorry for those who have to work the black Friday sales MY husband and I enjoy shopping and getting home before 6:00 am . Target is just trying to stay competitive.

  16. Nancy says:

Target used to care about it’s employee’s, their families and honored National Holidays. I have worked for Target for 30 years, this is the first year ever to be open on Thanksgiving Day, and instead of the early 4am opening on Black Friday, now they will open Thanksgiving night at midnight? So much for all the Target employee’s enjoying Thanksgiving with their families. I wish all those shoppers who shop on Thanksgiving Day and on Black Friday would have to work, then maybe they would understand. Anyone out there want to work my shifts so I can stay home and enjoy Thanksgiving with my family? Target is only closed on Christmas Day and Easter Sunday now, guess those holidays will be next. Very disappointed in the Target Corp. Just pathetic and sad! All for the mighty dollars in sales!

  17. Diana says:

Well just wondering what the people who are angry about having to go in at 11 pm on Thanksgiving would be doing at that hour to celebrate the holiday with family? I’m figuring that even people who dont work the holiday would long since be done with the Thanksgiving celebration by that hour?

    • Nancy says:

Hi Diane, just to clarify a schedule for most Target employee’s on Thanksgiving Day, will work from 7am to 3:30pm, since we are open from 8am to 2pm. Then they will return to work at 11pm and work to 7:30am. Most of them will need to sleep in between their shifts on Thanksgiving Day in order to work the overnight shift at 11pm. Hope this helps you to understand.

  18. Erin says:

You guys crack me up at 11pm to go to work . You guys act like you have to go in at 4pm on Thanksgiving. At 11 most people is done with Thanksging. Oh btw I work on Thanksgiving . There is lazy people who don’t want to cook so stop your crying and be glad u have a job!

    • Nancy says:

Hi Erin, most Target employee’s will be working on Thanksgiving Day from 7am to 3:30pm since we will be open from 8am to 2pm. Then they will return to work at 11pm and work to 7:30am. Most of them will need to sleep in between their shifts on Thanksgiving Day in order to work the overnight shift at 11pm. So hopefully you can understand how it effects their Thanksgiving Day with their families. We are thankful for our jobs, lets just not forget the reason for the season or the holiday.

  19. Joyce says:

Really? Going to work at 11p means you can’t spend Thanksgiving with your family? Uh if that’s true, hardly think you should be criticizing others, cuz that’s just not the norm.

    • Nancy says:

Hi Joyce, most Target employee’s will be working on Thanksgiving Day from 7am to 3:30pm since Target will be open from 8am to 2pm. Then they will return to work at 11pm and work to 7:30am. • Jewels says:

Nancy, it looks like maybe Target should consider hiring more people during the season so that the people who work Thanksgiving day don’t have to go home, sleep, and go back to work. Sounds like poor management style to me. Maybe that would help the employees not get pissed off. It’s black friday that’s what the company decides to do. If they don’t like it maybe they should find a new job or stop complaining and deal with it? Black Friday is nothing new. I bet if I were to go to Target right now all your Christmas stuff has been out since Christmas right?

  20. Nicole says:

As I sit hear and read the comments what comes to my mind is that we are forgetting to look at things from others perspectives. I like that it is opened earlier, but I feel for those workers and my buying bargains is nothing compared to them sharing time with their family and yes they may be done celebrating by 11pm but maybe they travel to see family and now instead of leaving at 10pm they are rushing out the door at 8 or 9 cutting their time short, What we are forgetting is the era of time we live in is clear we are all out for ourselves and family and during recessions we need to start to help and think of one another before ourselves. I may miss out on some bargains this year because I will not short my time with my family they will come first before any bargains besides I found so much better sales after black friday last year anyway.

  21. Erin says:

Btw Nancy my work is only closed Christmas. So shut your pie hole!

    • shel says:

Erin LMAO… Ok ok I feel for you Target employees but Hey maybe you guys are getting time and a half for working on Thanksgiving. Listen you guys work for a corporation it’s all about the money and time. Suck it up… They only care about the bottom line

  22. Angela says:

I’m glad to see Target is opening at midnight! For once, I…who work at a hospital and have always had to work holidays taking care of other people’s families instead of being with mine…will finally get to do do a little Black Friday shopping before having to had back into to work at 7am! In this economy, I’m blessed to have a job that I love, even if it does mean working holidays (hospitals don’t get Christmas or Easter off either, in fact…Easter is not even considered a paid holiday for us).

    • Nancy says:

Hi Angela, thank you for working at the hospital and taking care of others on the holidays and everyday, I have high respect for everyone in your line of work. So I am happy Target being open will help you and your shopping needs. I am very blessed to have my job and I still love my job too. Christmas is still a paid holiday but Easter has never been a paid holiday for us either. All I am saying is lets not forget the reason for these holidays.

  23. Rich Wilson says:

If work hours interfere with your family time, then pick some different family time. Why can you only have ‘thanksgiving’ on the third Thu of November? C’mon, quality family time is when you make it.

I’m happy for early openings because for my family Thanksgiving isn’t some set-in-stone-sacred. We make time for each other on our own time, not when some tradition tells us we’re supposed to.

I’m thankful I have a flexible work schedule, but I’ve worked a LOT of holidays and a LOT of graveyard shifts in my life.

  24. Texan says:

Be thankful you have a job….and think about the millions that don’t when you gripe about going to work. Seems to me most of you can’t spell and are full of self-pity. Stuff your pie holes and think about the homeless vets that fought in a foreign country so you could write your stupid and illiterate comments.

Let’s just put it out on the table.. WHAT in the world is worth leaving a warm bed for that you just can’t live without? I don’t get it…. STAY HOME and if you need to shop… SHOP ONLINE! MOST places have free shipping… NO snippy retail customers or employees to deal with. UNLESS it’s a newborn baby that needs to be delivered at that moment.. I am homebound, jammies, family, peaceful, checking ad updates, you name it… STAY HOME and let some idiot buy one of those two pieces of plastic junk that you can’t live without… just saying….

  26. mary says:

NOt looking forward to working on black friday… Standing up for 10 -11 hours while 6 months pregnant. Not looking forward to it …. =/

  27. Trista says:

I used to work in retail and every year the very first thing I did was request 3 days off for Thanksgiving. There was no way I was working Black Friday. If they tried to push me into it I simply showed them the book where I requested it off at the beginning of Jan and told them that I was sorry but my mental health came first. I knew I could always find another retail job willing to pay me the same low wage. I understand that with the recession most people can’t afford to be that bold with their employers right now and I know it sucks working all day and then having to come back to work at night, but don’t get angry at Target for trying to stay competitive, if they weren’t then you probably wouldn’t have a job to complain about.

  28. kANDI says:

I am a retail manager, and love this time of year!!!!! Retail never sleeps and on blf neither do I. For all you people complaining grow the hell up!!! If you CHOOSE a retail job then the hrs are not great and you miss family things!!!! Not everyone has a 8 to 5 job and weekends off. And thank god we don’t bc who the hell would wait on YOU!!!! The FAMILY should understand bc its money for your table. My FAMILY waits for me to get home if I have to work a holiday bc it is my JOB!!! THAT IS FAMILY!!!
